PARTICLE ACCELLERATORS, THE STANDARD MODEL AND SUPERSYMMETRY

The following book is for babies, curious 6 years old, teenagers and adults, all in one! What an ingenious idea!
๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐‹๐จ๐ฎ๐ข๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ฉ๐ž, an experimental physicist who works at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, wanted to share his greatest passion, which is particle physics with his daughter. Hence, he created this delightful book. Thank you Dr. Louie Corpe!
๐๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž ๐๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ is like exploring the tiniest building blocks of the universe. Scientists are like cosmic detectives. They want to understand the universeโ€™s deepest secrets.
Scientists developed a theory called the Standard Model. Itโ€™s like a map of the particle universe.
In the standard Model, there are three families of elementary particles. When we say ‘elementary’, scientists mean particles that cannot be broken down into even smaller particles. These are the smallest particles that together make up every other particle. The three families are leptons, quarks and bosons.
๐๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ are like the building blocks of matter. Theyโ€™re the ones that make up protons and neutrons inside atoms (like we saw in the book “Baby loves quarks”).
However, the puzzle (The Standard Model) isnโ€™t complete. Some pieces are missing.
New particles help us understand the universe, from quarks to GALAXIES!
In a theory called ๐’๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ, each standard model particle (such as photons, electrons, and quarks) has a mirror twin. If this theory is true, it would at least double the kinds of particles in the universe!
Scientists have theories (like the Standard Model) that describe particles and forces.
Discovering new particles tests these theories. Itโ€™s like checking if the Standard Model (which is scientists’ best guess so far of what the building blocks of the universe are) matches reality.
“๐‚๐„๐‘๐ is one of the places where we look for new particles. It’s on the border between France and Switzerland. It is one of the biggest laboratories in the world! Thousands of scientists from all over the planet work together to understand the universe.” – Particle physics for Babies
The instruments at CERN help scientists to test theories like the Standard Model.
Imagine CERN as a giant space lab. Scientists there use special tools to explore the tiniest particles in the universe.
These tools are like giant magnifying glassesโ€”they help us see things we canโ€™t normally see.
First, we have particle accelerators. Theyโ€™re like super-fast race tracks for tiny particles.
These Subatomic particles (particles inside the atom), zoom around the track, like little race cars and get super energized! Itโ€™s like giving them a turbo boost.
Next, the particles collide with each other or with targets (like cosmic bumper cars) at close to the speed of light (the speed of light, denoted by c being approximately 300,000 kilometers per second)!
When they crash, we watch what happens.
Finally, we have detectors. These are like cosmic cameras.
They take pictures of the particle crashes. We record what happensโ€”like cosmic snapshots!
The ๐‹๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ž ๐‡๐š๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ž๐ซ (๐‹๐‡๐‚) is the worldโ€™s largest and most powerful particle accelerator. It consists of a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets with a number of accelerating structures to boost the energy of the particles along the way.
Remember, at CERN, scientists use these tools to explore the universeโ€™s tiniest secrets!
“The process gives scientists at CERN clues about how the particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Cern wants to advance the boundaries of human knowledge by delving into the smallest building blocks of our universe. “๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿ”
“One day, we might have an even bigger collider. It may be 100 km long and could go under lake Geneva. It will take decades to design and build. Maybe you will become a scientist and use it to find new particles yourself, when you grow up?” – Particle physics for Babies
