Meet Raye Montague – a “hidden figure” who made waves in the U.S. Navy!

After touring a German submarine in the early 1940s, young Raye set her sights on becoming an engineer. Little did she know sexism and racial inequality would challenge that dream every step of the way, even keeping her greatest career accomplishment a secret for decades. Through it all, the gifted mathematician persisted finally gaining her well-deserved title in history: a pioneer who changed the course of ship design forever.

In addition to the illustrated rhyming tale, you’ll find a complete biography, fun facts, a colorful timeline of events, and even a note from Montague herself!

The important thing here is how Raye Montague never lets go of her passion even in the most difficult times.
She may have been upset when she did not receive the credit she deserved for the greatest work she achieved but more important for her was continuing her passion. With regards to the way the world works today, there would have been so many options, suing and so much more. She functioned on another wavelength altogether. She uses humor throughout her life in difficult situations. (You could do the same too!)

It is also worthwhile to note the respect she had for her work and her dedication and consistency in feeding her passion, in the face of what is going against her at the time.

So what is great about this book is her attitude. The young generation has a lot to learn from her coping mechanism.
Let us not forget that it is slowly being unveiled that rewards are not necessarily the right motivation.

Like Albert Einstein said: If people are good because they fear punishment and hope for rewards, then we are a sorry lot indeed.
We can just let children feel the satisfaction and joy in finding the solution to a maths problem. We have all felt this feeling at least once whether in maths or sports. This feeling in itself can be the ultimate motivation, a job well done and the reason to repeat this postive behaviour. There is your dopamine and serotonin!

And in Raye Montague’s words:
“If you have a dream like I did, study hard and stay focused!
Always remember that just because someone says “you can’t”, that doesn’t have to stop you. You might have to go in a different direction and it might take you a little longer, but you CAN achieve your dreams!”
And we value Humor so much that we have an entire section dedicated to only that!

From Wikipedia: The U.S. Navy guided missile frigates USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7), designed by Ray MonMontague, in about 19 hours.[3] With this accomplishment, she became the first person to design a ship using a computer system.
